Fair Trade

Who exactly picks those cacao beans? Who harvests the coconut nectar? Who dries the dates?  When it comes to ingredients we use at Zimt, the answer is: people who are treated well.

More often than not, workers are not treated with due respect- they do not receive a fair wage for their work efforts, work in poor conditions, and are treated, in general, with very little respect.  The bottom line of the almighty dollar is all that is taken into consideration.

When products are fairly traded, however, the aims are much broader- to help producers, often in “developing” countries, make better trading conditions and promote sustainable production practices. This includes paying a higher price to producers as they would normally be paid, as well as higher social and environmental standards.

The cocoa industry is particularly well known for its slave and child labour abuses.  Forty-percent of the world’s cocoa supply comes from the Ivory Coast, a region notorious for cocoa-related political and economic unrest, and even war. All Zimt cocoa products, as well as all other ingredients (and even packaging) is sourced as ethically as possible- even if it means ordering a $45 eco friendly date stamper online instead of buying a $10 alternative.
