Vegan
Fair trade is fantastic, organic is amazing and together, they are an essential to keeping people and the planet harmonious. It's a good thing that we are seeing more and more consideration given to both.
But what about the animals?
While fair trade and organics emphasize the treatment of farmers, the planet, and avoiding chemicals yourself, animals are often forgotten in the equation. We focus on what we have heard is healthy for our own bodies, but neglect the health and well-being of other creatures. We often think that organic means that any animals used in food production are treated well. Oftentimes, they are treated better- but that's not enough.
Let's look at a common ingredient in most chocolates- cow's milk. Cows raised on organic farms often have better living conditions than those on conventional ("factory") farms. But once the cows are of an age where they are no longer able to produce milk as they used to, cows from conventional farms and from organic farms are considered "spent" and are then sold for their meat. How they are treated from this point onward, during both transport and slaughter, is, to say the very least, horrific.
More and more scientific research is showing how truly healthful a balanced vegan diet is- it is naturally cholesterol-free, high in fibre, has been linked to prevention of many diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and even some cancers. And, if you don't plan on existing exclusively off of chocolate, it is very easy to get all of the nutrients to live a healthy of life.
